Some of the finest deep sea fishing is available on the Southern African coastline from Cape Vidal in the south through Sodwana Bay, Kosi Bay (all South Africa) up to the north at Inhaca Island (Mozambique). Situated right in the middle of this fertile fishing area, but significantly less "fished" than it's South African counterparts is Ponta do Ouro ,Ponta Malongane and the areas immediately to it's north.
It is here, where the south bound warm blue waters of the Mozambique current flow to within 10 Km's of the reef rich coastline of southern Mozambique (refer to the Marine Map) that the unexplored treasures of the large and exciting migratory game fish are still to be found in large quantities.
The common game fish caught in the area are: Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Bonito, Wahoo, Couta (King Mackerel), Queen mackerel, Kakaap, King fish and Barracuda. Similarly many species of good sized edible reef fish are also caught off the close in-shore reefs.
The summer months from October to April, when the water temperatures range from 25 to 28 degrees C, are the best deep sea fishing months. During this time the warm (predominantly north to south) current is closer to the shoreline and therefore good catches of game fish are taken off the closer reefs in shallower water. The winter months (water temperatures from 21 to 23 degrees C) are still good relative to most other South African fishing locations however one has to go further out to sea to find the blue water and warm water currents.
Relatively easy launches directly into the surf are from the partly protected beach at Malongane.
The most popular fish baits are halfbeaks (which are the prevailing game fish prey) and sardines.
