PROPHYLACTICS FOR MALARIA
Primary prevention
The most important primary preventative measure against malaria is preventing oneself from being bitten in the first place by mosquitoes. In order to minimise the risk of this happening, the following guidelines should be followed:
- Apply liberal quantities of mosquito repellent (Tabard or Peaceful Sleep) on all the exposed areas of your body whenever necessary. Remember the higher risk times are around sunrise & sunset and the summer months are higher risk times than the winter months.
- Wear long pants & long sleeves wherever possible during the higher risk times of the day.
- Always sleep under good quality & well maintained impregnated mosquito nets.
- Use insect repellent to spray the dwelling or room if there are visible signs of mosquitoes.
- Avoid going into the built up local tribal areas where the incidence of active malarial infection could be high.
Medical Prevention There are a variety of different prophylactics that may be used as a preventative measure against malaria. The most commonly used are: Paludrine and Darumal Combo Pack. The efficacy of this particular product in Mozambique is under debate. Larium has a number of possible side-effects and may not be used by people wishing to Scuba Dive.
Cyclidox / Doxitab. Mild Anti-biotics containing Doxycycline. This is the preferred choice of most medical practitioners, particularly for those people wishing to Scuba Dive.
Mesoquin.
It is advisable for visitors to Southern Mozambique to consult their personal General Practitioner with a view to ascertaining which prophylactic is best suited to their own specific needs. This is especially applicable for people who are taking medication for other health related conditions. British Airways has a free Health Care Advice Centre in most cities that is also able to offer authoritative advice to the traveller.
