Bird Watching

With habitats and vegetation ranging from woodlands, swamps and lakes to coastal dune forest and coastline, Southern Mozambique is home to some 523 species of bird.

We have noticed, over the past few years, an ever increasing population of bird life and bird species and, according to the experts, the area immediately around Ponta Malongane generally is a haven for birdwatchers.

Among the noteworthy species are sand forest birds such as Rudd's apalis, Neergaard's sunbird, Woodward's batis, Pink throated twinspot and lemon-breasted canary.

We would greatly appreciate input from any visitors to the area.

The Maputo Elephant reserve offers excellent opportunities for bird watching as several species reach the southern limit of their distribution in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Among these are Rudd's apalis, Woodwards' batis, Neergaard's sunbird and pink-throated twinspot.

Commonly seen species include African fish eagle, crested guinea fowl, olive bee-eater, woodland kingfisher and white helmet shrike, as well as grey, trumpeter and crowned hornbills.
